Bio:After fighting to get home to our flooded house after Katrina and then fighting to stay to rebuild our home and our city, my beau (now husband) and I had to concede that there aren't a lot of job openings in New Orleans for editors and executives and have Gone To Texas. It'll be a big change... no more Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras as paid holidays, for instance... but let's call it an exciting opportunity and see how it goes. This was my initial reaction to the idea.

"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us."
- Joseph Campbell

"It's not the end of the world... can't even see it from here."
- Jay Farrar

So now this is the LiveJournal Formerly Known As Postcards from the Edge (of the Mississippi), or, Tales of the City that Care Suddenly Remembered to Get Back To, and here's the info that went with it when nolagrl was still in NOLA:

The very first Postcard from the Edge (of the Mississippi) was written several hundred miles upstream several hundred years ago, when an accident of fate and first-marriage landed me in Dubuque, Iowa, and I decided I just had to share the magic with all of my far-flung friends. The Postcards nearly became extinct upon a move to Durham, N.C., which is nowhere near the Mississippi, but nowadays I live in one of the Edge (of the Mississippi)est places on earth, New Orleans, minus the first-marriage and plus a whole lotta new happy attitude.

"Times are not good here. The city is crumbling [....] Its condition is so bad that when I write about it, as I intend to do soon, nobody will believe I am telling the truth. But it is better to live here in sackcloth and ashes, than to own the whole state of Ohio."
- Lafcadio Hearn, in letter from New Orleans to a friend in Cincinnati

You just have to look at life and take it as calmly as possible. This is something that will eventually pass. And so you do your part to make it better.
- Walter "Wolfman" Washington, New Orleans musician, April 29, 2006

More than one year after, New Orleans itself, the City That Care Suddenly Remembered To Get Back To, is still in a whole heap of trouble, but you can do lots of different things to help:

* Write/call/e-mail your congressional delegation and let them know that the Louisiana and Missisippi Gulf Coasts need continued aid, long-term aid, coastal restoration, apportionment of oil and gas revenues, any kind of help they can get

* Go to the Gulf Restoration Network and help flood Washington with citizen concerns

* Drink an Abita Restoration Ale (or send off for a Restoration t-shirt, car ribbon, or baseball cap, they're nice)

* Send money to Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans, because while the big national organization has been awesome and is taking Katrina-prompted donations too, the New Orleans chapter gets more help from direct donations

* Second Harvest Food Bank, local or national, feeding the world and feeding our community

* New Orleans' City Park the fourth largest urban greenspace in the country, planned by Frederick Law Olmstead and his son, is self-funding and was hard-hit, as were the Audubon Zoo and the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas ... in fact, at the Zoo, you can adopt an animal, which is enormously helpful plus fun (think giraffe!)

* The New Orleans Public Library system was hard hit, and donations are needed there too; they really need cash rather than books, as much as most bookworms' first impulse will be to send good hardcovers

* And for even more fun, you can buy cool New Orleans stuff, and this website has links to gobs of local shops and artists and organizations... the Times-Picayune has been great about featuring lots of local retail relief almost every day.
